The project aimed to enhance the user experience of navigating a smart TV. Through user research, we identified key pain points, including difficulty navigating to specific apps and searching for desired movies.
Despite advancements in voice assistants, users expressed a strong preference for traditional remote controls.
Users were hesitant to adopt new technologies that deviated significantly from their established habits.
Introduced a digital remote with app information and a letter-based input system.
Users were reluctant to abandon the emotional connection with physical remotes and gave answers like using their mobile phones for remote control.
Prioritized maintaining the emotional connection to the remote while addressing the identified pain points
Incorporated a traditional telephone keypad for familiar navigation and a pointer function for enhanced control within the home menu.
By understanding user preferences and habits, we developed a refined remote design that seamlessly integrates familiar elements while addressing the challenges of navigating smart TVs.
The project is about finding a solution for a problem the user faces in the living room. The project was given by growth school and monitored by Anudeep.
Business goal:Building a product that help the user navigate in a better way in a smart TV.
User goal:Watching a desired movie.
The project started with secondary research collecting what are the common problem users are facing navigating to watch a movie.
I started with creating some rough macro and micro journey and then went with a interview. I interviewed five people with the question how they will achieve all these goals in their living room.
I started with the primary research process.
Problem found:It is an interesting fact that even though the technology has grown so much people stick to the regular habits. To a surprise in the interview process I came to know that users prefer remote over Alexa or Google assist even if they have them in their home. There was an emotional touch towards the remote. Some users where not even interested in using the google assist present in the remote since they felt like google assist some time might get the words wrong.
First, I came up with an idea about giving a digital remote to the user. Which can provide information that are available in the TV. For example, If Amazon prime is installed in the television it would show on the remote. And I thought giving the letter into the remote would solve the problem.
But in this iteration, I learned that it would kill the emotional bonding of the user towards the button in the current physical remote. And most of them said I can use my mobile phone to control the TV instead of getting a digital device again.
In this iteration I assured that the remote must have the emotional connect. And taking out the similarity and habit would make it difficult to go on the flow.
In this iteration I designed a remote which had no much changes from the current remote I took all the result I got from the first iteration I came up with some new ideas.
I added a traditional telephone keypad so that it improves their previous experience. And add a pointer that can move when with the remote while the remote is focused on the TV just in the home menu.
